The university is one of the oldest universities of India.
The university has 75 teaching and research departments in the chandigrah city. The university is offering education i9n the fields of science, engineering & technology, humanities, arts, sports and social science. The university has 188 affiliated colleges which are spread over Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh states. The regional centers of the university are at Muktsar, Ludhiana and Hoshiarpur.
